SAMADHAN

Samadhan began its journey from December 1981 with a mission to establish an infrastructure of accessible services for persons with intellectual disability living in poverty, using as far as possible, manpower and resources available within target communities, with active community participation.

The organization designed early intervention and home intervention programmes where rather than creating dependency on the professionally intensive support system; home management skills of the child are transferred to the mother or care givers.

Samadhan plans on the anvil include formation of a mother's group for autistic children and slow learners. The organization reaches out its helping hand from its Dakshinpuri and Dwarka centres and three satellite centers (all in Delhi, India). Women, agents of social change and especially mothers of children with mental handicap form bulk of Samadhan's members.

The organization conducts inclusive education for children and adults, making products and marketing them, conducting surveys, imparting training in home management and domestic counselling. Creative group work, drama therapy and puppet theatre are organized to improve children's communication skills and learning. At present the organization is looking after 36 mentally handicapped children. Out if these 30 are in the educational and vocational unit and 6 are in the satellite centre.
