SAMARTHYA

Samarthaya was founded in 1996 by Anjilee Agarwal and Sanjeev Sachdeva (both assisted wheel chair users). Both Anjilee and Sanjeev are trained by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNIESCAP) on promotion of Accessible Tourism at Bali, Indonesia and Non Handicapping Environment for disabled people Bangkok, Thailand.

The prime goal of Samarthya is to encourage the innate potential of people with disabilities (PWDs), instill confidence and to sensitize and create awareness about disability related issues including accessibility. Samarthya in association with Delhi tourism is making Dilli Haat disabled friendly. The first phase of barrier free Dilli Haat was formally inaugurated on 28th March 2003. The changes include levelling of front plaza flooring, demarcated pathway, lowering of ticket counters, around 27 small and big ramps with handrails are constructed to provide access to different points in the haat.

Samarthya has worked with Research and Design Standards Organization (RDSO), Ministry of Railways, Lucknow so as to help in the making of disabled friendly rail coaches. It is also working with the Delhi government on promotion of barrier free buses-High Capacity Bus Systems. It has brought out a technical brochure titled 'ACCESS FOR ALL' internal and external design consideration, which has been prepared in consonance with internationally accepted standards, building bylaws covering all kinds of disabilities. Architects, town planners, engineers and all concerned can use this material as a ready handy reference.
