CONCERNED ACTION NOW (CAN)
CAN's rehabilitation programme particularly for the disabled
people living in the low income urban slums has resulted in the
opening of vocational training centres in two slums. People with
disabilities are provided with skills training to facilitate
sustainable self-employment. CAN provides medical support through
its basic health services and networking with appropriate agencies
for diagnosis, treatment and postoperative care.
Working for positive change had enabled CAN to play an
instrumental role in getting The Person with Disabilities (Equal
Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act
passed in 1995. Since then CAN's major objective has been to bring
the legal safeguards to the notice of common man through its
publications, workshops and seminars which expedite the process of
implementation of the Act.
CAN has appointed community facilitators (CFs) living in the
slums and given them training to understand the challenges faced by
disabled people. Independently the CFs interact with agencies,
individuals and government departments to help disabled people in
their communities to become self reliant on a routine basis.
