Navjyoti Development Society : A Profile
Navjyoti Development Society (NDS) is a national level voluntary organization born in the year 1991 with a mission "to help the people to help themselves". NDS has been working in slums of Okhla Industrial Area, Delhi with distinct emphasis on deprived and working children living in difficult circumstances. Since beginning the priority is given to child education and changing of parental attitude.
Interventions in the area of Social Development supported by GSKCH
BCF has facilitated support for NDS in a program called "Nai Disha" through GlaxoSmithkline Consumer Health Care ltd. The activities supported under this initiative are:
- Balwadi: Balwadi is running for 3-5 years old children to build up their confidence and inculcate school going habit among them. 150 children are being covered in Okhla Industrial area.
- Non-formal / bridge course education: NDS has been conducting this activity aiming to prepare out of school children for formal system of education. The activity has brought opportunity to school dropouts, street and working children.
- Remedial education: This is a tool program to bring down drop out rate of children. The program assists school going children in their day to day study and inculcate school going habit. At present 275 children are being benefited through pre-primary, non-formal and remedial educational activities. In NOIDA, NDS is running REC classes in the schools premises with the help of school authority.
- Gender Education: Apart from child education, NDS is also conducting gender education classes for adolescents and teenagers in the community with active participation of parents. This activity is also being implemented at school level in collaboration of HPS Social welfare foundation in NOIDA.
- Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan: NDS is the active member Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, one of the biggest education programs of Government of India. Through this program NDS is covering more than 400 children living in slums and deprived of education. The organization is working in close collaboration of Department of Education, Delhi Government. Since inception of this program, NDS has admitted more than 225 children in various schools of south Delhi Area.
- Linkages: NDS always gives importance to parent teacher relation in terms of child development. Therefore, NDS conducts PTA meetings in the schools as well as in the community and provides opportunity to both parents and teachers to understand the problems of each other's.
- Seminars / workshops: Conducting seminars and workshop on child rights issue is an important activity of the organization. On this issue the organization is working in close collaboration with Delhi State Aids Control Society and NGO Forum for Street & Working children and UNICEF.
