Society for Child Development – An organization working with the differently abled

The overall objective of the Society for Child development is to promote a better environment for children and young adults with disabilities. While doing so it functions as a service provider, an action oriented research group as well as an advocacy and resource base for children, their parents and other support groups.

SFCD runs a special school named ‘Prabhat’ for children with learning difficulties (the term genetically indicates mental handicap and other associated disorders. The school was started in 1992 and today has over 80 students in the age range of 2 to 16 years. Activities are aimed at developing academic, social, communication and self care skills.

The society runs ‘Ragudev Vocational Rehabilitation Centre’. Students of Prabhat are transferred to the vocational centre after graduating from the academic programme. However, students graduating from other schools are also eligible to apply for admission. At present the centre has 35 trainees. The centre aims to serve as a transition point between education and occupation. At the end of the training period, employment in the Production center is offered. Some students prefer to set up a small unit at home – in which case, assistance in marketing of the final products is provided.

SFCD is also running Yamuna Environment Project initiated by young adults of the vocational centre. The project is concerned about recycling waste temple flowers into colours for holi and hand made paper.

SFCD has developed ‘Early Diagnostic Kit’ for the early detection of disabilities by paediatricians, rehabilitation specialists and researchers. The kit has been validated by the Department of Paediatrics, LNJP Hospital, New Delhi. The society also has; ‘Early Stimulation Kit’ for the use of parents and professionals for the development of early skills and school readiness skills. The kit has been extensively field tested in the Integrated Child Development Scheme of the Government of India in a project funded by UNICEF.
