Project WHY

Project WHY run by Sri Ram Goburdhun Charitable Trust.came into existence as an answer to simple question - why do slum children perform poorly in school. The project endeavors to work towards the betterment of society in innovative ways. The initiative that began with twenty children of the community from the Govt. school and a handful of volunteers teaching them spoken English in 2000 now covers 500 children in different locations.

The main objective of project WHY is to enhance school performance, contain dropout rates, and ensure access to secondary schools. The project runs 2 early education programme for toddlers, primary and secondary school outreach programmes, which are meant to supplement and stimulate formal education..

Children come at WHY project from areas like Okhla phase, Sanjay colony, Sanga Vihar etc. The project has created a loving network that has instilled hope and cheer in children and their parents thus establishing strong ties with the community. To empower and enhance the quality of education, the project took a holistic approach in the community. In order to sensitize the masses a social awareness programme was launched aiming to inculcate responsibility and optimism among slums children to fulfill their dreams.

The project operates from the community itself.. Community networks helps in identification and mobilization of the needy ones. Social workers from the community play a crucial role in spreading awareness about the activities of the project.

The project does not receive any institutional funding. It runs with the help of superb networks of friends worldwide and the people who feel concerned about the innovative approach it started. So in a way it is an indigenous project, which works for the community, by the community and of the community.

Apart from education the project also sustain the one Day-care for children with special needs where 20 children in the age group of 6 months to 5 years and young adults finds a heaven of peace in the form of learning basic living skills to ensure they can live life with dignity. The kids are involved in various activities like drawing, coloring, writing alphabets, numbers, singing, dancing, playing with blocks etc. The nature of disability of these children includes cerebral palsy, mental retardation, Down syndrome, autism and hearing impairment

The children's learning skills depend upon their understanding level and potentiality. Children are also provided computer skills training, stitching, gardening, drawing, learning shapes, counting with the help of objects etc.
