HOW CAN YOU HELP GOONJ

Here is a list of activities in which you can support Goonj's initiatives:

VASTRADAAN- our nation-wide movement is spreading fast in various parts of the country.
Be a part of it by-
  • Organising collection camps in your work/ residential areas. We have a full system in place in terms of publicity and other logistics. Publicity material and posters are ready with us. Fix up a tentative date and inform us and we'll be there to support your initiative.
  • Helping us in sorting and packing.
  • Spreading the message regarding this movement.
  • Informing us about localities and villages you think we should do the distribution.
  • Becoming a part of distribution in various villages in different states.
  • Offering some place to be used as collection point in that area.
SCHOOL to SCHOOL- Winner of 'Changemakers Innovation award', this programme involves urban school students in making better school amenities available for their urban poor counterparts. For more information on S2S log on to our site www.goonj.info
Be a part of it by-
  • Approaching urban schools - try to find out a relevant contact in the school, one of the volunteers can accompany you to meet the school authorities . We have a lot of publicity material designed for this and the best approach is to address the assembly after taking due permissions from the authorities.
  • Finding out about a possible Parents - Teachers meet, as we put up a small set of posters in many schools on these occasions and it becomes a very fruitful forum for the interaction with the parents and students.
NEWSPAPER CAMPAIGNS:
One of our main aim is to become self sufficient in terms of meeting our financial requirements. To this end we are running a campaign to get 5000 people to commit their monthly old newspapers to us in the National capital region. We sell these to raise funds for our work. This way we are not asking anyone for money, are helping clear up a messy aspect of a household and most importantly being able to raise funds without involving any funding agency.
We will also replicate the same model in many other cities.
Be a part of it by-
  • Charity begins at home. See if you can get other members in you family convinced that committing your monthly lot of old newspapers to Goonj is more worthwhile than giving it to someone for mere 20 rupees.
  • Think of 5 friends (5 is just a random number you can think of 10-100 people also) who you think would like to take part in this campaign. Even if one out of the five gets involved, we have one person less to search for in 5000. The good thing is the other four would become aware not only about the newspaper campaign but also about Goonj and Vastadaan.
  • Don't forget- once you have their commitment let us know their contact details, so we can begin the process.
RAHAT CAMPAIGNS-
We are known for providing relief in a very systematic manner in various disasters now. Every year we initiate a campaign 'RAHAT- FLOODS' for the most neglected disaster in this country which is- Assam, Bihar & west Bengal floods during monsoons. Apart form this we initiate major campaign in various other disasters like RAHAT- Tsunami, Rahat- Riots etc.

A regular work is among migrants of Kashmir and victims of various slum fires in the city.

Kindly look out for specific appeals during any disaster on our website and support our work as the need for volunteers suddenly go up during disasters for various activities.

NEED TO SET UP GOONJ IN MANY OTHER CITIES-
As the awareness is spreading fast we'll be starting formal operations in Mumbai & Chennai this year and then will add few more cities.
We need a space of about 500 Square feet in many cities on ground floor/ basement for storage and office , some basic office material and a team of volunteers to initiate the work in a few cities.
Do look out for people who can offer us these and we'll immediately start the operations there.

IDENTIFYING BENEFICIARIES-
Rural/ slum schools- Become our eyes and ears. We are always looking out for rural and slum schools in dire straits who desperately need our help. If you know about any such school anywhere in India, even in remote inaccessible areas let us know about them. What will help immensely is if you can find out about their contact details and if possible a little more about the state of affairs (like the number of students, size of the building, no of teachers etc). Don't worry even if you have read about such a school or heard about it from someone else, still its useful information for us so please feel free to call us up.

Distribution in other states- Goonj is operational right now in 13 states but has formal office only in Delhi due to paucity of funds. One way is to help us in distribution of material at the grassroots level and monitoring the work of partner NGOs. We are also open to the needs in any other states. If you come across any needy organisation or community in any part of the country do contact us with the details of local NGO/ Panchayat etc. which can become our distribution partner to reach material effectively.

Let us know - if you have-
  • Fifteen days or a week in advance or a long weekend/ holidays which you would like to devote.
  • Experience or expertise in a related area that you think might help in the process please let us know.
Then you can become a part of our distribution exercise in the villages and your feedback at the end of a monitoring, distribution visit will be an important aspect of this exercise
OTHER WAYS TO VOLUNTEER:
  • Data management: Goonj runs almost entirely on voluntary efforts therefore information and data management is a critical part of our work. If you can volunteer some time in a month, for this. You would need to come to our office and we can tell you how our systems work.
  • website- update: The goonj website on the net is a main point of contact between us and our volunteers, partners, general public, funding agencies, people abroad; the list is endless as is the potential of the internet. If you have expertise in web designing, web managing etc you can even help us sitting at your home.
  • Publicity material & posters: since we don't have big funds, we end up making all our publicity posters ourselves, if you have a creative streak, do join us with your bright ideas and paint brushes. The experience comes with a guarantee of lots of fun, free flowing tea and lots of friendships.
  • Organising exhibition campaigns in college & school; As the new session begins in the urban schools, we are going to develop an awareness building exhibition in these schools to sensitise the students about the plight of their counterparts in the far flung poor rural schools.
Old document-
You can become a part of it by-

What can a Volunteer do:
  • You can identify a medium or a big sized school in your area.
  • Try and find a student or better still a teacher who can guide you about the right people to approach in the school.
  • Once you have the contact details and the name of the concerned person to approach, let us know and we can give you the background information and literature about Goonj.
  • Fix up a meeting with the concerned person in the school, you can go for the meeting either by yourself or if you feel more comfortable we can send a Goonj representative with you.
  • If the school finds the idea favourable, follow up with the school in consultation with us.
As far as possible we will give you full support in terms of any logistical, information requirements you may have in this exercise.

  • You know what to do next : talk to them. I can assure you the reaction to your idea could vary a lot from person to person but don't loose heart. Even if one out of the five gets involved, we have one person less to search for in 5000. The good thing is the other four would become aware not only about the newspaper campaign but also about Goonj and Vastadaan. Who knows next time….
