Cancer Institute (WIA): Regional Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment, Adyar, Chennai
The Cancer Institute (WIA) founded in 1954, is an autonomous voluntary charity hospital and research center. The Institute consists essentially of four components, the hospital, the Research Center, the College of Oncological Sciences and the Division of Preventive Oncology.
Population Screening Programme For Cancers of The Cervix, Breast And Oral Cavity In The Thiruvanmiyur Belt Area
The aim of the project is to establish permanent cancer detection centers in the Madras belt region of Thiruvanmiyur under the direct control of the Regional Cancer Centre, the Cancer Institute (WIA) and to extend it later to the immediately adjoining villages of Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Neelankarai and Injambakkam.
The project entails:
- Education on cancer prevention.
- Detection of pre-cancers and early cancers of the cervix, breast and oral cavity in the female population, in the age group 20-60 yrs of the Thiruvanmiyur region.
- Detection of pre-cancers and early cancers of the oral cavity in the male population, in the age group 20-60 years of age.
- Anti-tobacco education.
The project design is that of a semi-organized screening program with the following activities: Enumeration of residential households in the study area for identification eligible subjects (30+ years of age), collecting baseline data on cancer awareness from eligible subjects, provision of ID cards with unique number, imparting health education, extending invitation for screening, establishment of field clinics for clinical examination of subjects and appropriate management and referral.
Tribal Health Initiative: Sittilingi Valley of Dharmapuri District in Tamil Nadu
Tribal Health Initiative is a registered charitable Trust, started 13 years ago in the remote forested Sittilingi valley of Dharmapuri district in Tamil Nadu. The valley is inhabited 95% by tribals of the Malayalee (hill dwellers) tribe occupying 21 villages and number about 10,000. Only 8 of the villages are connected by the infrequent buses and the backwardness of the region is mainly due to its inaccessibility.
Health Initiative
THI is a collective organization comprising:
A base hospital providing primary & secondary health care facilities.
A proactive outreach programme of health care, education and awareness rising in the local community.
Objectives of the project:
- Organization of Health Committees in villages to promote health and wellbeing at the domestic level , thereby ensuring better participation, involvement and responsibility by the community.
- To train a new batch of Health Workers who will be able to take up responsibility in the community as well as the base hospital.
- Improvement of all health parameters – (IMR reduction by 50% in 3 years), Antenatal checkups for 95% mothers (thrice) and 100% (once), decrease malnutrition under 5 by 20%, decrease child mortality under 5 by 50%, achieving 100% immunization by 3 years.
- Augmentation of Health Auxiliary / Health Workers / Staff responsibilities and capacity building.
- Bringing health awareness among school going children.
- Continuation of Curative Health services.
- Farming Initiative
The project aims to attain self sustainability in farming for all the farmers in the Sittilingi valley. This is being planned to be achieved:
- By returning to traditional seeds and traditional farming practices.
- By increasing farm biodiversity.
- To learn and use organic fertilizers and pesticides.
- Doing soil improvement and water conservation measures.
